Placement Experiences

Clinical interventions are provided by honorary unpaid practitioners; here several practitioners share their experience of providing therapeutic interventions within HMPS. The specific challenges of forensic work, its context and responsibilities are shared and will be useful for anyone considering applying for a placement.

“I feel very fortunate to have gained a clinical placement with Forensic Therapies. It is very stimulating to be directly involved in something so crucial for helping prisoners to rebuild their lives and contribute to the prevention of re-offending.”

Catriona, psychodynamic counsellor

“Its been a fascinating experience being invited to practice at HMP Holloway; for many of the women I have worked with it constitutes their external environment. Moreover, it's also been a privilege being invited to practice and explore their internal environment. I’m grateful to Forensic Therapies for the support offered and the contribution they have made to my continuing professional development.”

Mahensingh, honorary forensic psychotherapist

“My Forensic Therapies clients do so often invite me with them to plumb the depths of human suffering, a journey through hostile territory which they may feel unable to make in isolation. I cannot help but feel responsible to make sure that we both return safely on the journey back.”

Robina, existential psychotherapist

“In my experience most offenders have also been offended against in some way. Having recently become involved with Forensic Therapies, I think its strength is that it offers a much needed service for people in prison, and manages to maintain a balanced focus on the clients as perpetrators and victims. This focus is achieved through excellent training and clinical supervision.”

Deirdre, psychodynamic counsellor and independent trainer

“Seeing the progress in my clients makes my commitment and the challenge of my work in the prison worthwhile.”

Jane, psychodynamic counsellor

“As a practitioner Forensic Therapies has provided a unique, challenging and satisfying experience of clinical practice within a forensic setting.”

Sandra, person centred counsellor

“Forensic Therapies offers lots of support, structure and opportunities for development which are so important during training, but absolutely essential in the prison environment.”

Anna-Rose, integrative psychotherapist, drama and movement therapist
